Rebecca Dobrinski is a writer, editor, trainer, and process manager. She serves as the Managing Editor of The Journal of Optometric Education, published by the Association of Colleges and Schools of Optometry, writes for Auburn University’s Urban Studio, al.com’ and Design Alabama’s quarterly newsletter, serves as a presentation and writing coach, and provides newsletter editorial direction and process documentation and succession planning support to small businesses.
Rebecca co-edited the exhibition catalogue Thornton Dial: I, Too, Am Alabama (2022) for the Abroms Engels Institute of Visual Arts (AEIVA) and is working on an exhibition catalog of artist Willie Cole with her co-editor Paul Barrett. While at the Birmingham Museum of Art, she edited the publications The Collectors Circle for Contemporary Art at Twenty (2012) and Etched in Collective History (2013), to which she also contributed an essay, and worked on the team who converted the quarterly newsletter to a magazine. She copyedited the urban history textbooks Interstate: Express Highway Politics, 3rd Edition (2012) and The Making of Urban America, 3rd Edition (2011), both with her mentor, the late Raymond A. Mohl, PhD. She has edited numerous fiction books, theses, and dissertations,.
Passionate about communication, Rebecca has developed seminars, lectures, microlearning programs, and workshops on how to talk about ideas, time management, Agile practices, and business writing. She recently helped a local professional development and Agile education platform earn B Labs Certified B Corp status.
She returned to Birmingham in 2003 to finish her BA in History at UAB, then went on to earn MAs from SCAD (Historic Preservation) and UAB (History). She holds multiple certifications in Scrum, the Agile project management methodology, as well as certificates in DE&I from the University of South Florida and Business Applications Professional from Microsoft. A lifelong learner and serial volunteer, she is organizer emerita of TEDxBirmingham and founder of FuckUp Nights Birmingham, a member of Leadership Birmingham (2017), a graduate of Columbia University’s Developing Leaders for Nonprofits program and Co.Starters, a member of the inaugural cohort for the Birmingham Entrepreneurship Academy, and a speaking coach for events and private entrepreneurial clients.
